Happy 100th Birthday 19th Amendment!
Yes, the 19th Amendment turns 100 this year! What is the 19th Amendment? In short, it gave women the right to vote. It says:
“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
In case you did not know, women did not always have the right to vote in elections in this country. Sounds crazy in this day and age, when women are running for and being elected to all kinds of positions. Homage needs to be paid to those fearless women who led the movement to get the right to vote included in the U. S. Constitution. Remember Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Burns, Alice Paul, and African American suffragists, Sojourner Truth, Ida Bell Wells-Barnett, and Mary Church Terrell - to name just a very few.
Take time to learn your Constitutional history and teach your kids. Most importantly, WOMEN GO OUT AND VOTE!!
